What Is Millwork?

Millwork is defined as any product that has been created using a mill. However, such a broad definition doesn't give a clear picture of what this looks like in your home. From staircase railings to accent pieces on the ceiling, the possibilities are endless. Take a look around and see what millwork has been hiding in plain sight.

Crown Molding

Crown Molding is the most well-known example of millwork. This is the border than rounds ceiling edges and makes them meet the wall organically. From straight lines to swooping curves, it comes in all shapes and styles. Transform an otherwise bland space with crown molding, giving the room character.

First Impressions

First impressions are just as important for rooms as they are for people. The entrances to spaces you enjoy should set the expectation and tone of that space. Using millwork to frame an entranceway or door can create a subtle ambiance before even stepping inside. Having that threshold, whether physical or not, helps make the room feel cozier and more contained.

Arcades and Accents

Most millwork is seen as simply trim, but there is so much more that can be done. Ceiling accents, for example, can be used as a focal point, or to help draw attention to a light fixture. Popular in older homes, these ‘medallions’ represented social prowess, and the more ornate, the more status a family had.  Another trend is utilizing pillars instead of a solid wall in order to open up a space. This ‘arcade’ style architecture is another old trend made new. From holding up railings to load-bearing support, these pillars are all examples of millwork within a home.

Framed

Bookshelves and recessed bars have been an interior design staple for years. The secret to a successful nook in a room isn’t in the nook itself, but in how the borders connect it to the room. Using millwork to flow the edges of cabinets and bookcases into the larger aesthetic of the room makes them look like they belong. Superior craftsmanship and the ability to customize the final product gives any room in your home an elegant look.
